The Precision Rifle Flag is a scaled version of Old Glory made of 3/8” mild steel plate. The stripes are bare steel and red iron oxide (good old fashioned rust). The Union is gun-metal blue (cold bluing).
The stars are created by the deposition of the copper jacket coating from the lead projectiles as they pass through the steel at a very, very, high rate of speed.
Velocity is only the fourth most important variable in this equation. Third is Accuracy. Second is Precision. And the number one most important factor is, always, Safety!
Shooting steel inside 100 yards; with rifle velocities anyway; is not only dangerous, it’s not necessary. The shrapnel coming back toward the shooter is traveling, at the very least, half the speed it was traveling when it impacted the plate. At 3000 feet per second that's 1500 fps. Way more than enough to put your eye out kid!
